about

Solo acoustic fingerstyle original guitar music.
Root jazz syncopated style, melody driven. Strongly french flavored.
A bit of creole, a dash of piedmont blues, a hint of musette waltz here and there.
Exclusively in Drop G tuning (open G6, meaning DGDGBE), hence the title.
Mainly played on resonator (tricone and biscuit) and Macaferri guitars, although 3 numbers are played on a custom Lukas Brunner foldable guitar.

"December 2005, two days before Christmas. I ask to the medic if my son could be out of the hospital just to spend a few days at home, with the family. He is eight years old, and his last three months have been a train wreck of exams, diagnoses, and surgeries. Cancer. Emergency, fear, and pain. The doc looks at me, and says : "Sure, sure. You’re exhausted, and he will be happy to be at home." Then, after a silence : "And... you know... it could well be his last Christmas..."

This is how Jean-Paul Bataille came back to guitar.

"Each and every evening we were around his bed, his mother telling a story, and me playing. I hadn’t touch a string for years . But after a few weeks, a light, breezy and swinging music was flowing from my head through my fingers. French rooted, jazz flavoured, creole coloured. Straight dry acoustic guitar. I didn’t know this music was in me."

Before this family scaled tsunami, Jean-Paul Bataille had a fruitful career as sound designer, composer and studio owner. He pioneered new technologies in music, produced a successful sound effects collection, and traveled the world over to record traditional musics in very remote places.
He then choosed the "less is more" approach in his life : these days he composes and plays music for guitar, with sparse arrangements if any. Inspired by early jazz, popular french swing and carribean rythms, his tunes feature strong memorable melodies on a solid groove. He found his own voice, with a little help from his son.
A long time french parisian, he moved to West Indies in the eighties, then to Canada in the nineties. He is now living in Montreal.

He won the Montreal Guitar Grand Prix in 2008, and works as an independent sound recordist and designer.

about

Jean-Paul Bataille

Having been able to earn my life and raise a family by doing what I love is a small miracle, all things considered.
And after six decades on the bench, the passion is still there.
